The Book
Hers was a normal life, at least she thought it was, work, food and all of life’s necessities were delivered to her door. Not that she ever saw anyone deliver them, she never saw anyone. The only one she talked to was a voice in her head, but she thought that was normal, right until the moment she had to leave her flat because it was about to be engulfed by the sea, in which was a giant squid which seemed very keen on getting in through her living room window.
The main characters
The One - Try as she did she couldn’t remember life before the flat she lived in, she couldn’t remember moving in to it, nor could she remember her name. It was only after leaving the flat that she began to wonder why.
Carla – She was the voice in the Ones head, she was her controller, though the one didn’t realise this, she didn’t realise that Carla existed outside her head or that she had a name. Carla was waiting for her one when the flats were engulfed by the sea and normal life as they had known it changed for ever.
The Poly and Anna
The book
On arrival for the second year of her degree course Anna Walker finds that the course has been re-organised by the computer and a right mess it has made of the job. Unfortunately the only one who agrees with her is rather abruptly removed from the course, when Anna thinks she is going the same way she decides to fight.
The main characters
Anna Walker is the eldest of two children. She has never got on well with her brother Brian and for her Poly is a rest from arguments at home. Returning to the Poly in her Black mark 1 mini she finds that she now has arguments to face there, with lectures acting as though anything the computer spews out is gospel.
Susan Lake is Anna's friend. Faced with the problem of a course that has been badly planned by the computer she goes into attack mode, which puts the lecturers on the defensive and soon she is spirited away.

Alone again Anna
The book
Isolated from family,friends and Polytechnic, Anna headed off, alone, in her Mark 1 Mini into the unknown. Taking temporary work to supplement her savings she managed to support herself whilst trying to decide what to do next. She also met a lot of people who seemed to be in greater need of help than she did. Helping them sort their problems enabled Anna to find her own place in the scheme of things.
The main characters
Anna Walker is in limbo deciding on which way to go in life.
Phil Parker is Anna's friend, she keeps bumping into him and they seem to get on when they meet.
George Parker is Phil's younger brother. He turns up, out of the blue, with their parents, they go, he stays.
